On Thursday, September 12, 2024, Poplarville held a vital election to fill a vacant Board of Alderman seat left by Kevin L. Tillman, Sr., who resigned due to chronic medical issues. Mayor Louise Smith, who also serves as an alderman, praised the election process and the candidates, saying, “We were happy to have so many qualified people run.”
Votes were cast at City Hall, and while the official outcome will be announced on September 20, unofficial results suggest Janie Richardson will be the newest Board of Alderman member. A lifelong resident of Poplarville, Richardson has dedicated over 22 years to the city’s planning commission.
Reflecting on her experience, she said, “On the planning board, I’ve learned a lot. I just want to be a voice at the table for the community, and I know the city council shares my vision for what’s best for our city.”
Richardson plans to enact this vision and focus on boosting economic growth and supporting the development of new businesses. She also emphasized her belief in the importance of community engagement, stating, “I want our citizens to be engaged in open conversations with our city leaders, so we can ensure we’re doing what’s best for the people.” Eager to start her term, she concluded, “I’m excited to be in that position, and I’m ready to serve the citizens of Poplarville.” Results are expected to be finalized on the 20th.
